Top Destinations for a Family Vacation to Crete, Greece
Hey guys! I’m excited to give you a look behind-the-scenes guide on our recent family trip to Crete, Greece with my husband’s family. As you know, they all live in Europe - so it’s always a great excuse for some international travel for one of the best family vacations we get all year!
the best Places to visit in Crete with young kids
(as close as I can get to a Crete travel guide with two crazy toddlers and my iPhone!)
Rethymno is the area we stayed in, which was very family friendly.
Directly across the island is Plakias beach which was beautiful with the surrounding mountains (from the shots below of the kiddos in the sand!) it’s very rocky but it’s a fun day out.
The Fortezza Fortress from 1593 was in Rethymno and you can find out more here: https://www.rethymno.gr - it was easy to walk around with the kids here and they loved playing castles with their cousins! The place is packed with history, having been built in the 16th century by Venetians who occupied Crete. (from the photos below it’s the ones where we are stood up high with the ocean behind us)
Arkadi Monastary http://www.imra.gr was located up the hill from where we were staying and it was such a cool place to visit. (in the photos below, it’s the one where Aura is twirling in the gardens)
Elafonisi is known for its pink sand and it was breathtaking (in the photos where I’m holding Aura with the beautiful pink sand beach behind us)
Balos beach was stunning, you can take the ferry from Kissamos or drive like we did. I highly suggest taking the ferry as it’s a tough hike with kids.
Agia Marina is a strip that has tons of restaurants and beaches in front of them and it’s gorgeous. We loved the pizza place along the strip and went there twice during our trip.
Iraklion Dinosaur Park was a great excursion for the kids.
