This was the first year we got a Christmas tree as a family of four. We always seem to be travelling during the holidays, especially as Nic’s family live overseas but this year we’re right at home here in CA.

We headed out to The Little Hills Christmas Tree Farms in Petaluma, Sonoma County, our favourite farm town for cow watching to the North to pick our first family tree.

So I decided to keep the tree rustic for the Holidays and funny story here… I went to Home Depot and got a string of 300 white lights naively thinking that would be enough and yet it barely covers a third of the tree! Back to Home Depot with Tudor I go and we end up with around 900 lights just on the tree!

We topped it off with a simple metallic rustic star which looks just perfect. I didn’t want any tree ornaments this year so we just did pine cones and it looks super cosy and rustic and natural. I got the pine cones at Crate and Barrel and they’re just spray painted gold and silver, and I got the kids a little owl and squirrel made out of pine cones each, and that’s how we’re keeping it this year! Nice and simple.

We let the kids help decorate the tree and of course Tudor wanted to get his pine cones as high as possible, so up he went on Daddy’s shoulders to put it right at the top of the tree! I had Aura up on my shoulders because of course if Tudor is high, then Aura wants to do what big brother does too!

Always remembering my Mom during this Christmas season, I know she would’ve loved decorating the tree with the kids and going to pick it out at the farm. We always had a tree back home but it was a faux one, and I know she would’ve loved the picking process. I hope for those of you that have lost loved ones this holiday season brings you peace and joy!
