Family Adventure to Half Moon Bay for Crabs
I always say, a family adventure day is much better if there is less of a plan. We decided the night before to head down with our neighbors to get some fresh crabs right off the boat and enjoy the day out of da Cay! We shuffled to get baby Aura and Tudor packed up and ready to go. Bottles, food, water, snacks, jackets, diapers, change of clothes, hats, sunscreen, toys, baby carrier and cash for crabs...check, check and check!
Half Moon Bay is a coastal town about an hour south of Tiburon, where we live. It was a beautiful drive down the coast and so was the weather. The cute town of Pacifica is right before our destination is the perfect spot to give surfing a first try at Montara Beach Park. At Half Moon Bay, the boats all looked so picture perfect lined up. I just love all the nautical faded colors old fishing boats are painted. We picked our crab boat of choice and got two 2.5 pound crabs. There was also a boat that came in pulling a large net of sardines you can see below.
Tudor loved seeing all the crabs up close! In fact, one of them pinched his little finger through the plastic bag, ouchie! It was then I think we was OK with the fact we could be eating these little guys. He watched us make them and wasn't upset...the crabs were pretty non moving at this point. I grew up boiling lobster's so he was going to have to see this eventually.
We stopped for lunch at a little shack on the beach for crab sandwiches and clam chowder. I dove into my chowder and wondered why it tasted more like Thanksgiving gravy than chowder? Then I was told that it was non dairy chowder...what?! Only in CA! I am a New Englander and the more Buttah and Cream the Bettah! Yep, I dipped the final product in full fat organic butter, delish!
